A new interdisciplinary journal for replication research.

As researchers we stand on the shoulders of other researchers. That means, we build on the evidence and work others have generated. It is vital for researchers to be able to trust that what they build upon.

We have seen many studies that show that this is not a given. Whether in medicine, in education sciences, or economics - pretty much all the fields struggle with reproducibility and replication to a degree that is scary.

It is pretty clear to me that there are a few things that help dealing with the problem:

  1. Adhere to good research practices.
  2. Check each other on how well we do.
  3. Repeat important research to make sure the findings hold up.

Now for the third part, there is a new exciting journal: Replication Research (R2).

R2 logo
  • It’s rooted in the values of Open Science: Diamond open-access model (free-to-read, free-to-publish, authors retain the rights to their article), embedding the Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) principles within its journal guidelines, and enabling PCI (Peer Community In) review compatibility
  • It’s multidisciplinary: Digital Humanities, Experimental Philosophy, Geoscience, Linguistics, Management Sciences, Marketing, Medicine, Mental Health, Metascience, Neuroimaging, Neuroscience, Political Science, Psychology, Qualitative & Quantitative Research Methods.
  • It’s ready for your submissions: Accepted formats include all types of replications, reproductions, and conceptual contributions on the topic of replication and reproduction research.

Disclaimer: I am on the advisory board of R2.

Why do we need a new journal for this? Traditionally work in this space has not been easy to publish. Most journals want submission to be novel, but repeating someone else’s work inherently isn’t all that novel. It is an important building block in creating a trustworthy foundation to keep building upon.
